Tea Auction Centre to be set up in Dibrugarh

Tea Auction Centre to be set up in Dibrugarh

DIBRUGARH, Feb 11: It is the cup that literally cheers; and Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts have the largest number of tea estates in the State and the country as well which are to take its rightful place in the tea map of India – a place usurped up by Guwahati – as soon as the much awaited Tea Auction Centre set up and opened for business in Khanikar in the periphery of Dibrugarh town.Disclosing the selection of Khanikar for the proposed tea auction centre, Water Resource Labour and Employment Minister Prithibi Majhi, in who’s constituency Khanikar is located, told The Sentinel the district administration has already been instructed to find out and acquire lands so that the centre could be set up at the earliest. On being asked the reasons for the delay in setting up the centre in Dibrugarh despite of the fact that Dibrugarh district alone has the largest number of tea gardens and a substantial number of small tea growers, Majhi told The Sentinel whatever logistic and infrastructural hurdles were there in the past have been removed now. The upgradation and expansion of Dibrugarh Airport at Mohanbari, establishment of extensive railway links including the proposed Bogibeel Bridge and the upgradation of road communication systems as well as the development of the hospitality industry in the area now make Dibrugarh the prime choice for setting up of the auction centre and other organizations concerning trade and commerce. The local planters, whom this reporter had contacted, are all enthused about the new developments. They are of the view that the produce sold at site, which is the norm worldwide, will remove the time lag and will also make for lowering of costs which will ultimately benefit the customers.
