Tigers escape from enclosure; 3 Assam zoo employees suspended

GUWAHATI: Three employees of Assam state Zoo were suspended today for alleged negligence in duty which led to two tigers escaping out of their enclosure on Saturday.
An internal inquiry conducted by the zoo authorities found the trio guilty and suspended them with immediate effect, division forest officer of the Zoo Narayan Mahanta said.

Animal keeper Rangeel Ali and two employees of the veterinary department — D Appa Rao and Prabin Mikir — were working in the enclosure when eight-year-old tigress Divya and her 20-month-old cub strolled out of a gate that had been mistakenly left open creating panic among the visitors.

The tigress and her cub strolled in the zoo without harming anybody and it took zoo employees nearly two hours to tranquilise them before pushing them back into the enclosure.
Mahanta said a mistake had taken place but such incidents would not be tolerated and all zoo employees have been warned.

The 130-hectare zoo, the only state zoo in the northeast, has a special arrangement for big cats as it has a hilly terrain. The tigers are kept in enclosures guarded by iron barricades and surrounded by moats with viewing spots at safe locations.

The zoo campus also houses a botanical garden and had the two tigers entered it, it would have been difficult to track them.
