GUWAHATI, Jan 22 – In continuation of the drive to destroy illegal cannabis cultivation in Kamrup and Barpeta, the officers of Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate, North East region on January 21 destroyed illicit cannabis (Ganja) cultivation grown on approximately 152 Bighas of Chaland in Kasumara, Mohsora, Andabhanga and adjacent areas of Barpeta district and Karimangal, Soturpara and Puranatatia besides other areas of Kamrup district.

Gogoi moves Centre on price rise

GUWAHATI, Jan 20 – Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has sought the intervention of Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee to ensure smooth flow of PDS items to Assam to arrest price rise of essential commodities. In a letter to the Union Agriculture Minister, Gogoi expressed concern over price rise of essential commodities and urged him to ensure sufficient stock of PDS items in the depots of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) in the State to arrest the rise in prices of essential commodities in the open market.

Meanwhile, in a separate letter to the Railway Minister, Gogoi said that the Railways should ensure timely supply of rakes as per the requirement of the FCI and trade bodies to ensure availability of all the essential commodities. ASSAM TRIBUNE

Rural electrification scheme

KHUMTAI, Jan 20 – The Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification Scheme was inaugurated in Golaghat district recently. PWD Minister Ajanta Neog ceremoniously inaugurated the scheme in No. 2 Jamuguri village under Jamuguri GP. She said that the scheme had been launched in the comparatively backward Doyang area, but soon it would cover the entire district.

Another 25 KV electric transformer was installed at Jamuguri and a 16 KV transformer at Kacharichuk under the same GP.

The inaugural function of Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification programme was presided over by Golaghat DC Harendra Nath Borah.

Free text books distributed at Karara

BAIHATA CHARIALI, Jan 18 – In a ceremonial function held on January 6 at Karara Higher Secondary School campus, free text books prepared by Assam State Textbook Production and Publication Corporation Limited and supplied by Asom Sarba Siksha Mission were distributed among schools of the area.

The programme of the distribution of free textbooks was formally inaugurated by Afzal Hussain Khan. BEEO of Karara in presence of teachers of the schools, resource teachers, CRCC and district quality manager (DQM). In the programme books on four mediums, i.e Assamese, Bodo, Hindu and Bengali were distributed among 397 schools. Of those three were higher secondaries, 26 provincialised high schools 36 ME Schools, 192 LP Schools, two high Madrassas, one senior Madrassa, seven EGS and two hard to reach (HTR) commonly known as Jyoti Kendra Schools.

GUWAHATI, Jan 16 – In a meeting organised by the District Health Society of Bongaigaon on January 8, deputy commissioner Santanu P Gotmare handed over cheques to the husband of sterilization death beneficiary in the presence of advocate Hareswar Das, joint director of Health Services Dr DK Gogoi, Additional CM & HO Dr B Deka, district programme manager Surabhi Das and other staff of the Health Departments at the DC’s conference hall, an official release said.

Arrest Subba: AGP

GUWAHATI, Jan 13: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) demanded of the CBI to arrest Congress MP from Assam Mani Kumar Subba in the wake of the Supreme Court verdict on his citizenship status.

Terming the apex court verdict on Subba a landmark judgement, AGP chief spokesperson Atul Bora said the SC verdict proved that the Congress had made a foreigner Member of Parliament (MP) by giving him party ticket. Since All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Sonia Gandhi had given party ticket to Subba, she is accountable to the people of Assam for making a foreigner their representative. “Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi can’t also shrug of his responsibility in making Subba a representative from Assam,” Boro said.

The AGP leader further said since Subba minted money by illegally entering Assam, all his property should be confiscated.

Goley strokes for employees in 4th Pay Revision

GANGTOK, Jan 10: After a few days of silence Goley has once more entered into the batting position suppressing the government’s dose of indecent show cause notice to 31 government employees for violating the service rules and regulation. This time the dissident MLA has charged the government against the delay in dispensing the new salary as per 4th Pay Commission and disbursing the arrear of allowances in pieces instead of providing in lump some.

Goley intimated that government employees were suffering heavy due to rising inflation and themselves being cut off from the various salaried applicable benefits. As per the others States in the country have already received their 100 per cent allowances and arrears except in Sikkim there is a lag of implementation of new pay revision, terming this as a serious scenario for government in coming time.

No polio cases detected in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, Jan 10 – Meghalaya Chief Secretary WMS Pariat on Saturday claimed that no polio cases was detected in the State during the last 12 years.

Pariat who administered polio drops to the children in Ganesh Das Hospital in Shillong to mark the inauguration of the Pulse Polio Immunization programme in the State of Meghalaya said that the Pulse Polio Immunization Programme is one of the biggest campaigns in the entire country and added that the State Government has accorded top priority to eradicate this disease and the challenge ahead is to remain polio free.

One killed in attack by leopard

DIBRUGARH, Jan 5: A leopard was killed and a person injured at Chabua in Dibrugarh district yesterday. The incident happened at Bismile Chungichuk village under Chabua Revenue Circle. A group of six leopards has been terrorizing the people of the area and killing pets. When locals noticed them in the tea garden yesterday and tried to drive them away by making loud noise, one of the them attacked one Bhaktibar Barua, who is presently undergoing treatment at AMC. Meanwhile, an animal was caught by the angry mob and died in their attack.
